Back to painting! THREE choices for "Harvest of Art" show.

It's hard to be away from something you truly love, so I knew my lack of painting desires wouldn't last long.  Today was art class and last night I realized in order to get two of my paintings in Friday's show, I had to finish one and paint the sides of another!  UT OH!  WORK TO DO!!!

So today I finished my girl on the beach and painted the sides to the painting below.  If they don't make it into the juried show (which they probably won't since they are small paintings), I will put them up for sale on Daily Paintworks.

I finished the umbrella , put in the back cross straps on her bathing suit, and made the one mountain in the distance a different height than the other.

Haven't felt like painting...

You just have to be in the mood and for the last four days I haven't had the urge to pick up the paint brush or piece of pastel.  Nothing else urgent is going on in my life, I just needed a few days rest from it all.  Doesn't matter what kind of talent you have, without the urge, it just doesn't happen.  

Maybe tomorrow I'll break that non-painting streak. 

Thank goodness it doesn't happen often.

I still need to work on getting that horizon straight and I

need to add in some yellow straps for her bathing suit as well as some

shadows on the suit.  The umbrella needs some work too.

Working on the flamingo's webbed feet!

Here is the progression of the flamingo's webbed feet.

More was defined on the left and I started to complete the right one.

As I look at the dark tips of the webbed feet, I don't like them that much and may make them lighter.

To me, the one on the left looks more real and the one on the right looks like plastic...so I will have to work on it a bit more.  Also I have to make the foot on the right larger.  I like the sand on the left foot more than what it looks like on the right, but that's an easy fix.  Painting is making mistakes and knowing how to correct them.  But most of all SEEING the mistakes!  Sometimes you don't see the mistakes or things you want to change until you take a photos!   Sometimes it takes until you post it online and look at it by how it will appear online!  Live and learn.

Working on flamingo's webbed feet...a little, and more areas!

I've started work on the flamingo's webbed feet.  I started with the left one.  It's still not to my liking, but I'm working on it!  I haven't touched the one on the right.  I also started to block in some more color on the legs.  Yes, they're still skinny.  On purpose, I know they need to be thicker, but that comes in time, not right now.

Here's a closeup of the feet.  You can tell I put more time into the one on the left.  

I've been trying to figure out how to make his (or her) feet to look like they are placed in the sand. 

My artist friend noted there wasn't a shadow under the flamingo, and it's probably because he was in the shade, and also the time of day it was, late afternoon.  So upon her suggestion, I went online to look at other flamingo's shadows.  They're usually just a large blob...or just the legs cast a shadow.  That's way off in the future, but I will keep it in the back of my mind.  

I also added some paint to the head area.  It's far from being done, but at least some color is blocked in.  

I need to go to the art supply store and purchase some phthalocyanine green to make my favorite black. I combine that green with alizarin crimson to make a gorgeous black, it's not so stark.  

Just remember, this is NOT done yet!

All the while I painted this, I was loving it.  I loved the softness of the colors in the background, so in contrast, I did the palm trees with a more dark color.

I still need to finish the girl.  The paint which will be her skin is wet as well is the bathing suit.  I need to put some definition in the umbrella.  She looks a little chunky, but once some definition of muscle goes in, she won't be.  Besides, she's more lifelike with a little weight on her!  There also needs to be some straps to hold up that suit but until that skin dries, none is being painted in.  I worked right over the ocean colors, so both the yellow and the skin needs to have multiple layers.  But...I like where this one is going!
